Tempered glass or film: which screen protector
Share
Screen protectors come in two materials and the choice is not about quality. They protect against different kinds of damage.
Tempered glass
A rigid glass sheet that absorbs impact. If the phone lands face-down on a tile floor, the protector takes the crack and the display underneath survives. It feels like the original screen because it is glass. It is also thicker, and it will not follow a curved edge.
Film
A thin flexible layer, usually TPU or hydrogel. It resists scratches well and does very little against a hard impact. What it does do is bend, which means it covers a curved-edge display fully where glass leaves the edges bare or lifts.
How to choose
- Flat screen, worried about drops - tempered glass
- Curved edges - film, or glass specifically made for that model
- Worried about keys and sand rather than drops - film is enough
- Foldable inner display - film only; never put glass on a folding panel
Do not forget the cameras
On most current phones the camera bump is the part that touches the table when the phone is set down face-up. Lens protectors cost a fraction of a camera repair.
