Which charger does the iPhone 18 Pro actually need?
Share
Apple stopped putting a charger in the box years ago, which leaves a genuine question every time someone upgrades: what do you actually need to buy alongside the phone?
The short answer
A 30W or larger USB-C power adapter, and a USB-C to USB-C cable. That combination gets the iPhone 18 Pro to roughly 50% in about fifteen minutes, which is Apple's own figure and the fastest the phone will go.
Why a bigger adapter does not help
A 65W or 100W charger will not charge the phone any faster. The phone negotiates the power it wants and then stops asking. Where a larger adapter does earn its price is if it also has to charge a laptop, or if it has two ports and you want to charge a phone and an iPad at once.
Where people actually lose speed
Almost always the cable. A USB-C cable rated for 60W will charge the phone fine; an old, cheap, unrated cable often will not carry the current cleanly and the phone falls back to a slower rate. If your phone charges slowly on a good adapter, replace the cable before you replace the adapter.
What about MagSafe?
MagSafe tops out lower than the cable, so it is the convenience option rather than the fast one - a bedside or desk charger you drop the phone onto without aiming. Qi2 chargers use the same magnet ring and work the same way.
What to buy
- A 30W–45W USB-C adapter for the wall
- A USB-C to USB-C cable rated 60W or higher
- Optionally, a MagSafe or Qi2 puck for the desk
